This year's theme is

"Performing in New Places"

From ancient times, theatre has been performed in places other than indoor theatres. The Ancient Greeks built open-air amphitheaters to accommodate as few as 500 and as many as 40,000. Shakespeare's theatre house, The Globe, had an open roof. The Irish poet William Butler Yeats chose to present his plays in people's living rooms. Throughout the 20th century, many American movie houses doubled as vaudeville theatres and opera houses. Even today, Shakespeare-in-the-Park is a regular part of the summer in many cities, including Noblesville. Other directors have used warehouses, rooftops, abandoned buildings, and churches as places of performance.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been tough on everyone, but we have decided to use the idea of social distancing in a very positive way. Campers will learn the ins and outs of outdoor performance. Throughout the summer, they will understand and develop the special skills needed to command an audience's attention in outdoor venues of different shapes and sizes. While performing outside isn't always easy, the special challenges will allow campers to learn greater focus, thereby enhancing their ability to concentrate over long periods and learn and retain information in spite of distractions.
